Turning on Always
Pomelo counts the days you do not open it only with Always location. iOS asks in two steps: first “While Using”, and later, on its own schedule, whether to keep allowing it in the background. Say yes to both.
To change it yourself: iOS Settings → Pomelo → Location → Always, and leave Precise Location on. The Location line in Pomelo’s own Settings shows where you stand and opens that screen for you.
Always means a few checks a day, when you have stayed somewhere or moved a long way. Pomelo never runs continuous GPS.
Fixing a day
Open Timeline and tap the day. From there you can change its country, add a second country for a travel day, or delete the day. Each day shows how it was counted: noticed, noticed on the move, noticed when you opened Pomelo, noticed by the widget, or added by you.
Tap Check now on Today to make Pomelo look once, right away.
Adding a stay
For a trip Pomelo missed, or time before you installed it: Timeline → Add a stay, pick the country and the dates, and every day in that range is counted. You can also add a stay from a country’s page in Countries. Stays you add can be edited or deleted later.
Rules
Open Rules → Add a rule and pick one:
- Schengen 90/180 — days in any Schengen state in the last 180 days, against 90.
- Visa-free stay — days since you arrived in a country, against its limit. The limit is filled in from the built-in table, with the date it was checked, and you can change it.
- Days in a window — days in one country in the calendar year, the last N days, or any 12 months. Use it for a 183-day threshold.
Each rule shows days used, days left and the date to leave. Turn on Alert me at 80 % and 100 % to get a notification. One rule is free; Pro has no limit. Rules are a count, not legal or tax advice.
Travel days
Settings → Counting → Travel days count for. Both countries (the default) counts a day you spent in two places for each. Where I sleep counts one country per night. Every number updates when you switch.
Restoring Pro
Pro is a one-time purchase tied to your Apple ID. Open Settings → Pomelo Pro → Restore purchase. If it says there is nothing to restore, check that you are signed in to the same Apple ID you bought it with. Purchases and refunds are handled by Apple.
Backing up
Your days live only on your phone, so keep a copy. Settings → Your data → Back up writes one file with everything; save it to Files or iCloud Drive.
On a new phone: Restore from backup and pick the file. The data already on the phone is kept as a file, not deleted. With Pro, Export CSV gives you every date and country for a spreadsheet.
Common questions
Does it drain my battery?
No. Pomelo makes a few checks a day, when iOS says you have stopped somewhere or moved a long way. It never runs continuous GPS.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Country borders are built into the app, so days are counted with no signal at all.
Do travel days count twice?
By default, yes: a day in two countries counts for both. Switch to Where I sleep in Settings to count one country per night.
Does it need an account?
No. Your days live on your phone, and your location never leaves it.
Is this tax or legal advice?
No. Pomelo is a count of your days. Check the rules that apply to you with the authority or an adviser.
